How to achieve life-changing goals

Read time: 3 minutes / Subscribe to this newsletter

I do something that apparently only 38% of Americans do.

New Year’s resolutions.

In fact, I start working on mine every November. Reflecting, sorting, prioritizing—I love it.

Over the years, my resolutions have led to some real life-changers:

  • Taking a break from alcohol (six years and counting)

  • Quitting my corporate exec life (twice)

  • Writing a book

  • Hosting a podcast

  • Buying a company

Much to my surprise, many people don’t value making resolutions. But those same people value setting goals. Confusing, I know.

The next three minutes are about you and setting life-changing goals for yourself in 2025. (See what I did there.)

5 Things You Need to Know About Achieving Life-Changing Goals

I.

One Goal Can Fuel Your Year

People who set specific goals at the start of the year are far more likely to achieve positive changes than those who don't. Even a single, well-defined resolution can give you a boost in motivation and direction for the months ahead.

🪜 Get one step closer:
Start by asking. “What’s ONE thing I want MOST in my life & work that I don’t have now?” The simple act of reflecting and setting your intention could be the push you need to make 2025 your best year yet!

II.

Write It Down, Make It Happen

Writing down your goals significantly boosts your chances of success—by as much as 33%. The clarity, commitment, memory boost, and accountability that come from putting goals on paper make them easier to achieve and keep you focused on the end goal.

🪜 Get one step closer: Take a few minutes today to write down one goal you’re serious about achieving. Putting it in writing brings it into focus and strengthens your commitment to making it a reality.

III.

Don’t Just Dream It—Plan It

Research shows that simply envisioning success isn’t enough to reach our life and work goals. In fact, overly positive thinking alone can sap the energy we need to take real action. Instead, combining our vision with a practical plan to overcome obstacles boosts motivation and performance. This approach, known as WOOP (Wish, Obstacles, Outcomes, Plan), has been shown to help people improve health, and build stronger relationships—all by turning dreams into actionable steps.

🪜 Get one step closer: Download the free WOOP app—it guides you in setting powerful intentions and can boost your chances of success by 10x. Available on Android and Apple.

IV.

Social Accountability Amplifies Success

You’re 95% more likely to achieve your goals when you have social accountability. Sharing your goals and progress with a mentor, coach, or accountability partner boosts your chances of success, thanks to the motivation, support, and feedback they provide.

🪜 Get one step closer: Seek out a small group of like-minded individuals to share your goals with and track progress together. The encouragement and insights from others can keep you accountable and help you reach your goals faster.

V.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Improving by just 1% every day can lead to exponential growth—38 times better by the end of the year! The secret to success isn’t massive leaps but small, consistent actions that build momentum over time.

🪜 Get one step closer: Commit just 15 minutes a day—1% of your time—to improving a skill, habit, or goal. That small effort compounds into life-changing results over the course of a year. Start today and watch your growth multiply!

I hope you consider setting a resolution for yourself. Whether it’s how you’ll create more impact at work or how you’ll find purpose beyond it, being intentional about what you want most can dramatically change your life.
