3 Questions to Unlock Your Future
Read time: 3 minutes / Subscribe to this newsletter
At some point in our career we have an awakening.
We ask, “Is this what I want to do with my life?”
And the answer is likely, “Hell no!”
We want to build our legacy and wealth. But we don’t want to lose ourselves in the process.
In this inaugural newsletter, let’s kick-off your journey to personal & professional freedom with three simple questions.
They reveal what you want and what your biggest blockers are to getting it.
Question 1: What do you want most for your life & work that you don’t have now?
This is an easy way to frame your vision.
Carefully read the question. Consider your life & work at the exact same time.
People talk about wanting balance, and that’s fine. But I’m encouraging you to think about congruence.
When you set career goals independently from life goals or vice versa, this causes a massive disconnect.
To succeed in a major life goal, you need to adjust your work habits. To succeed in a major work goal, you need to adjust your life habits.
When I considered this question for myself, here was my exact answer:
I want to grow my legacy & wealth without sacrificing personal relationships. I want to work less, make more, feel professionally free. And I want to use my signature strengths more and more.
Question 2: What are you unwilling to do to achieve what you want most in your life & work?
This question is counter-intuitive to most people. Generally, they focus on adding tasks to achieve their goals.
But here’s an amazing discovery. It’s actually things you’re unwilling to do that cause you to not get what you want most … or at least makes the process harder.
As an example, people say they want to be a solopreneur and quit the corporate treadmill. And when I ask what they’re unwilling to do, they say they can’t sacrifice financial security and health insurance.
In essence, what’s stopping them from going solo isn’t developing a great business idea or finding their first customer. Instead, it’s a limiting belief about financial security.
(Then I remind them how many companies arbitrarily lay people off.)
When I answered this question, it was easy. I’m unwilling to be a smarmy salesman doing cold calls and bugging people with irrelevant offers.
(By the way, it caused me to have a much slower build in my business. And I had to be okay with that.)
Question 3: What 1-2 things can you start doing today to achieve what you want most in your life & work?
This is an easy way to craft your plan.
It’s overwhelming to build a 500-line project plan. Not to mention, planning gives the illusion of progress.
So, don’t overthink the plan.
Getting what you want most in life & work won’t happen overnight. What’s important is consistently showing up for your goals and taking small steps every single day.
15 minutes of doing something is more important than 15 hours of thinking about doing something.
Read that again.
When I answered this question, here was my simple plan. I need to start writing and posting now—just put content out into the universe and see how people respond.
Call to action. Grab a notebook, find a quiet place, and answer the three questions above. Yes, write it down! Be conscious of the questions you might be struggling with the most.
Now, take a leap of faith. (Yes, this will require a leap.)

I’m launching One Step Closer as a newsletter, but it will soon be a vibrant community. You’ll be able to share advice with each other, seek community support and create accountability.
For now, the low fidelity version of community is to at least interact with me.
I can’t wait to read what lights you up for your future!
