Don’t Be Cheap With Your Goals

I never imagined life could be this good.

Never. And that’s saying a lot because I’ve been accused of having my head in the clouds.

My dreams have always been big. But not this big.

At 53, I’m physically, mentally, and emotionally stronger than I’ve ever been. Financially, I’m more secure.

Until a few weeks ago though, I never articulated how this came to be… what my “magic pill” has been. Then someone at a small speaking event asked me this:

“What advice do you have for people who want to make big changes in their lives and don’t know where to start?”

The answer left my mouth before fully processing it. “You can be cheap about anything, but never be cheap with your goals.

I want you to pause and think about your MOST important goal right now. It can be personal or professional.

Now imagine the benefits of achieving it—personal fulfillment, financial freedom, or finally checking off that bucket-list item.

It’s an amazing thought, isn’t it? Achieving something that’s so meaningful to you.

Here’s the harder question: What are you unwilling to do to get there?

When I’ve been in similar situations, there was very little I was unwilling to do. In fact, I go all in.

My goals are so important to me that I refuse to leave them to chance. And what I’ve learned is that I can be cheap about anything, but I’m never cheap with my goals.

As an example, when I was a CIO and my goal was to have a strong, cohesive team… I got coaching and advice from Patrick Lencioni.

When I wanted to fully understand my gifts and strengths… I worked with Marcus Buckingham.

When I launched my business and wanted to position my thought leadership powerfully… I paid for Don Miller’s help.

And as I write my second book, I have the trusted guidance of Patricia Wooster.

The point is, I don’t “cheap out” when it comes to working with the best of the best. Why? Because my goals mean that much to me. And I want experts who have achieved what I want most to guide my path.

By the way, being cheap isn’t just about money either. It’s also being cheap with time.

I’ve worked with many clients who have amazing dreams and goals. But when they came to me, they weren’t making progress. So, I asked to see their calendar. The truth wasn’t hard to find.

If you give 8 hours a day to helping your employer hit their goals… don’t you deserve one hour for your own?

Your goals deserve more.

Be cheap with clothes. Or you car. Just don’t be cheap with your goals.

Find experts who have actually achieved everything you want, and ask them to guide your path.

As I finish this week, here’s a quick-start list of (non-cheap) solutions I’ve personally used to hit my goals. These aren’t paid endorsements, just what’s worked.
