Post-Election Week: 5 Things Leaders Need to Know to Support Their Teams

Read time: 3 minutes / Subscribe to this newsletter

I joined a meeting yesterday that had an unexpected start.

As participants waited for others to join, the conversation turned to the election. People felt safe with one another, so they spoke openly and candidly.

Emotions surfaced, and then something remarkable happened.

One participant, experienced in leading “centering” meditations designed to help people release emotional tension and refocus, sensed the need in the room. She invited everyone to turn off their cameras and mute their mics, then guided us through a brief 3-minute meditation.

When cameras came back on, a few people were visibly wiping away tears.

It made me reflect: How are leaders supporting their teams during the post-election period? Steering clear of politics, the reality is that 47.5% of voters didn’t see the outcome they hoped for.

That means potentially 1 in 2 of your employees might be struggling this week.

These next 3 minutes are about you, the kind of leadership you offer during high-anxiety times, and practical ways to support your team.

5 Things You Need to Know About Supporting Your Team Post-Election

I.

Recognize the Continued Emotional Impact

The days after an election can still carry emotional weight, with many employees feeling ongoing stress, anxiety, or even division. Acknowledging that emotions may still run high shows understanding and empathy.

Try this:
Send a message recognizing the emotional after-effects of the election and reminding your team it’s okay to feel a range of emotions and that you’re there for them.

II.

Be Open and Supportive

Continue to create a psychologically safe space for employees to express their feelings, if they wish. While promoting discussion isn't necessary, being open to listening is key.

Try this:
Offer optional check-ins or remind your team that you’re available for one-on-one conversations. Regardless of your politics, be open to theirs. That’s leadership.

III.

Encourage Healthy Boundaries

Staying informed post-election can be important, but it can also lead to burnout. Reinforce the importance of boundaries to help your team maintain their focus and well-being.

Try this:
Recommend screen breaks and share quick mindfulness or stress-relief practices to help manage ongoing news cycles.

IV.

Maintain Flexibility

Even after Election Day, the emotional and mental toll may persist. Offering continued flexibility in work arrangements can help team members manage their stress levels.

Try this:
Make it clear that your team can adjust their schedules or take brief breaks as needed.

V.

Emphasize Empathy and Unity

The post-election period can highlight differing opinions, so it’s crucial to focus on fostering empathy and unity. Reinforce the idea that respect and connection are vital for the team.

Try this:
Share a message that reminds the team of their shared goals and the importance of supporting one another, even amid differences.
